The first day

Finally after all the talking and decision making, all the chopping and changing and all the whinny blog entries about it. I had my first day at university. I must admit it was a bit of a culture shock getting up at the crack of dawn again for the first time in ages, but it was kind of refreshing.

The traveling's not as bad as I thought either it only takes about an hour on the train and then five minutes walk to from Kidderminster train station. Plus it's situated right smack bang in the centre of the town too.

As is the norm with most first days at new places I knew nobody at all, but really neither does anybody else so everybody feels just as arkward about the boring small talk nobody wants really wants to go through.

The day started off with a really fun and interesting hour long libary induction...Yay! After that we had a talk by the head of the department and a few other lecturers who we will most likely have to interact with and most of the usual welcome to the next stage of your life type spiel, you know the sort of thing I'm sure.

Then we had an hour and a half for lunch (which was a nice surprise) I tagged along with a few people from my course that I'd made small talk with earlier and we wondered around Kidderminster aimlessly for the 90 minutes.

Turns out the group of people I was talking to are all comic book nerds...Like me! I had some great conversations about comics and sci-fi. Also because of the nature of the course everyone is a film buff too!

After lunch we went ot the studio room which is quite big and obviously where any sets would constructed. Then after filling out many a boring form, we had to go round the room telling the whole group the following facts about ourselves:
  1. Your Name
  2. Where your from
  3. Your career aspirations
  4. The last film you saw at the cinema
  5. Your favorite film

And my answers:

  1. "Hi my names Stuart"
  2. "I live in a little town called Shirley not too far from here"
  3. "I'd like to get into film and learn about as many aspects about the business as possible"
  4. " The last film I saw at the cinema was Spider-Man 2 (knowing nod to the newly befriended comic book nerds"
  5. "There's too many good films to name a favorite so I'll just say the Back to the Future trilogy."

The last question I was debating for ages while the questions went round the semi circle. Everyone else was coming out with classics, and of course you can't repeat what someone else has said even if you did think of it first because then you just look like your stealing their idea and that's not good first impression.

As the Mexican wave of introductions moved closer I was worrying about following what was pretty much The top ten list of all time greatest films. But when the guy two seats away from me said his favorite film was The Muppets Christmas carol I feared no more.

So all in all my first day was a good one and from the course layout that I read on the train home some of the modules look very interesting, like shooting a 15 minute documentary on a subjects of your own choice.
